Volunteer

So you are interested in getting out there and doing something to help us achieve a world without leprosy. We have a number of options that will suit different people.

Projects, Electives and Short-term Overseas Work

Short term placements are usually for those with a health-care background or studying in a health-care field such as

  • Medics
  • Nurses
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Podiatrists

Other skills that are relevant to our work may also be needed from time to time but it is best to enquire.

A number of recent elective students have written about their experiences, hopefully this will answer some of your questions and inspire you to do likewise.

If you are interested in this type of placement, you should first of all contact Linda Todd who will be able to discuss your options with you and get the ball rolling with all the relevant paperwork, some of which you will have to complete. You will also have to attend an informal interview.

There are opportunities in quite a number of the countries where we work depending on the type of work you're interested in and any professional or academic requirements you need to fulfil.

James Hardie who spent 3 months at a hospital in India as part of his psychology studies says "I feel privileged to have had the opportunity and would recommend it to anyone."

So if you are looking for an elective or project as part of your studies, want to take a career break or are looking to do something different in your retirement we may have just what you're looking for. Further information is available from The Leprosy Mission International.

Longer-term Overseas Work

TLM International have a number of vacancies for staff around the world. Some of these are permanent positions, others fixed-length. The list changes all the time, so check back regularly if this is something you are interested in.

Closer to Home

Staff Vacancies. The TLMS staff team is small but growing, have a look to see if there are any vacancies at the moment in which you think you could help to raise the profile of leprosy and TLMS across the country and work towards a world without leprosy.

The work of TLMS would grind to a halt if it wasn't for the great work of our volunteers. If you have some free time (anything from a few hours per year up to a few days per week) and could make a contribution to the work of TLMS we would love to hear from you. Here are just a few things that you might want to think about.

  • Be a Church Rep, the point of contact from TLMS to your church, making sure people are kept up to date with what we're doing, passing on details and sometimes collecting money. Get groups in your church or community to invite one of our speakers along.
  • Approach other churches, schools or groups in your area to get them involved, maybe together you could start an Area Committee in your area.
  • Be a Trading Rep, take catalogue orders from friends and neighbours especially in the run up to Christmas. Contact Anne for more information.
  • Help out in the office. We always need people to answer phones, send out letters and generally keep the behind the scenes work of TLMS going.
  • Send us good quality stamp and postcard collections as well as other collectables, we can convert these into cash.

There are many more ways for you to get involved if you wish, any of the staff would be happy to talk to you about how you can help make "a world without leprosy" a reality.
