About Leprosy and TLMLeprosyFar from being ancient history, leprosy is still prevalent in many parts of the world. In India today 100 times more people are disabled by leprosy than by polio. Around the world a new case of leprosy is discovered roughly every 90 seconds many of whom will already have permanent disability or deformity. Leprosy is, generally speaking, very misunderstood across Scotland and indeed the world. Part of the role of TLMS is to dispel some of the myths surrounding leprosy so that people understand the full scope of how it can devastate the lives of those affected by it and be inspired to join us in working to see our vision of a world without leprosy become a reality. So here for your enlightenment we present nearly everything you ever wanted to know about leprosy. TLMThe Leprosy Mission (TLM) is an international Christian charity. Working in nearly 30 countries across Africa and Asia, TLM brings healing and hope to those affected by leprosy. TLM has a vision of a world without leprosy, a world in which both the causes and the consequences of leprosy have been completely eradicated. Working through its own hospitals, clinics and education facilities as well as in partnership with governments, churches and other NGOs The Leprosy Mission offers holistic care to those affected by leprosy. Care is designed to be appropriate to each community and individual's needs. Services available in different parts of the world include
The Leprosy Mission Scotland (TLMS) was founded over 130 years ago and throughout its history it has worked across Scotland to raise awareness of leprosy and its effects. Through TLMS the people of Scotland can directly support the work of The Leprosy Mission around the world. Resources from Scotland (prayer, finances, people...) have a direct impact on the care provided to those affected by leprosy in some of the poorest countries in the world. What We DoOur work around the world is incredibly varied. Stories of patients and staff from different parts of the world will give you just a flavour of the work that we do. A number of Scottish students have recently been abroad with TLM on electives or short term project placements, their experiences will also shed light on different aspects of our work. Speaking Engagements - Staff and volunteers are available across the country to speak to any group interested in our work, in churches, schools, community or business groups. We have a wide range of presentations and media at our disposal and would love the chance to tell you more. Contact your Area Coordinator for more information. Fundraising - Individuals, families and groups across Scotland support the work of TLMS through a variety of fundraising efforts. Every donation no matter how small or how large helps to make a difference to the lives of people affected by leprosy. Could you take part in a fundraising scheme or event or even organise one yourself. Check out our Fundraising Guide and our list of upcoming events or contact our fundraiser to find out more. For more information you can download the 2006 Annual Reports of TLM Scotland (0.5MB) and TLM International (5.6MB). |
