Roger Gives A Helping HandRoger Hamlet, a 21 year old student from Strathclyde University is giving a helping hand to transform the life of a patient at The Leprosy Mission's Anandaban hospital in Nepal. Belly Thapa is 22 and due to the effects of leprosy has had to have her left hand amputated. This obvious physical effect of leprosy has made life very difficult for her and led to her being discriminated against in her village. Roger is hoping to change all that. Roger is flying to Nepal in July to volunteer at the hospital through The Leprosy Mission Scotland and in his bag will be a prosthetic hand for Belly. Roger, who is in his second year at the University's prosthetics and orthotics department, explained that "the hand is not bionic. It is a cosmetic aid and costs around £300. "Taking it over personally means it can be matched with Belly's skin before we get the perfect colour and tone from the manufacturers of the silicone top layer. "I'm hopeful it will provide several benefits in her life." Roger and Belly's story was reported in the Daily Record. You can follow Roger's experiences in Nepal on his blog. Roger has a fundraising page for those who wish to help him to pay for the hand.
